A Healthy Ecosystem for AI Agents: Introducing the AFI

November 7, 2025

At Imbue, we believe that AI agents will radically reshape society in the coming decades. In this future, a healthy ecosystem of open agents and software will be necessary for individuals to have control over the technologies that shape our lives.

Building toward this future motivates our work. It’s why we released Sculptor, with the ambition for it to be the best way to build, modify, and run agents — when the barrier to creating and sharing open agents drops, everyone can benefit from them. It’s why we also work on the conditions that sustain open agents, including business models for open software and fundamental machine learning research to make neural networks understandable.

The future for AI agents isn’t guaranteed. The decisions that we make now, about the things we build (and not build) and the rules that govern them, will shape the world they enter and transform. We need good judgment, humility, and the ability to hold meaningful conversations between builders and policymakers to make these choices wisely.

Last week we joined Anthropic, Intuit, Edgerunner AI, Unstructured, Shift5, and Lilt AI to launch the Agentic Futures Initiative (AFI) to help shape clear, practical, and forward-looking policy for AI agents.

The better we can bridge these worlds, the richer a future we have the chance to build. We’re excited by the part the AFI can play in helping to realize that future.
